It can be really difficult to decide when the time is right to put to sleep your pet cat, as they are much more secretive and harder to understand than dogs.
After a discussion regarding your cats recent health changes and answering any questions you may have, a sedation injection will be administered to your cat. The injection is a sharp scratch just like us having a vaccine, but it’s over before your cat knows it and should be the only thing they feel. The cat then drifts into a heavy sedation and will look like they are sleeping. Usually this takes between 2 to 10 minutes.
Once your cat is fully sedated, we place a cannula to give the final overdose of an anesthetic agent. It is just that – an anaesthetic- so your pet goes into an even deeper sleep before passing peacefully away. Euthanasia is a really kind thing to do, especially when the vet can provide a home visit to reduce stress. Cats perhaps more so than dogs can get very upset with visiting the vets, so home euthanasia is a lovely option to minimise this.
